Wind should be part of the mix

June 22, 2012

Since there have been so few letters in support, and Reunion Power offered to write letters of support for people to sign, is this letter written by the author or by Reunion?

Wind should be part of the mix

June 22,2012
Grandpa’s Knob was the site of an early endeavor to capture the power of the wind to generate electricity. Years ago there were wind turbines erected on Mount Equinox. There are presently wind turbines working in Searsburg. Wind turbines located on mountainous terrain are not a new concept in this state.

I am not opposed to wind turbines. Why? Because I prefer being able to see the turning blades of wind turbines through clean air, rather than viewing them through the hazy, polluted air that comes from smoke stacks of fossil fuel-burning generating plants. If this state is really sincere about reducing its dependence on foreign nonrenewable and renewable energy sources it needs to get serious about building a variety of electrical generation facilities.

Creative proposals have been suggested: installing low-flow generators at the outlets of flood control dams, biomass electricity-generating plants, solar farms, methane-powered generators, natural gas-fired generators, and wind turbines.

A mix of different forms of electrical power generation would serve this state well. It is my hope that we, the people of Vermont, have the foresight and initiative to be the resourceful citizens who Calvin Coolidge took such pride in when he stated:

“I love Vermont because of her hills, her scenery and invigorating climate, but most of all because of her indomitable people. They are a race of pioneers who have almost beggared themselves to serve others. If the spirit of liberty should vanish in other parts of the Union, and support of its institutions should languish, it could all be replenished from the generous store held by the people of this brave little state of Vermont.”

If the State of Vermont is really serious about reducing its’ foreign oil dependency and staying true to its spirit of independence, we should just say no to any project will benefit big corporate entities at the expense of Vermont and Vermonters.

Here’s what else Calvin Coolidge said:

“Boys should never lose their love of the fields and streams, mountains and plains, the open places and forests. There is healing in the trees for our tired minds and overburdened spirits. There is strength in the hills if we only lift up our eyes.”

The greedy landowners like yourself (U Friese), politicans, and big business are the problems of this world. Obviously you all should spend some time doing research on industiral wind and you will find it is all about money. It will not reduce but increase the carbon output of fossil burning plants and in most cases the turbines use more electric then they produce. Reunion’s misleading and inaccurate information seem to only fool a few!!

        Dear PekingD
I am sorry to disappoint you – I am not at all a landowner !! But like with everything else , it appears you do not do your reseach. And if – you only believe the things you like to believe and what will be ok for your negative opinion. I do not own any land at all !
Second : Do you know what the landowners will get paid from Reunion ? If not , why would you call someone greedy ?
Third: You do not have to pay property tax like some of the land owners. So if the landowner is looking to offset the expenses for the taxes. Is there somthing wrong with it ?
Fourth. Everybody is screeming – we need clean power. Well – as long ot is not in my backyard ! Will it be in your backyard. Oh, now I understand.

Regarding your comments – it is public record that you are a landowner in Castleton and have signed a lease. It really doesn’t matter what amount you are being paid from Reunion or anyone else. It is all about money! We can see now how Reunion has fooled you or money has blinded you. Belief and reality are two different things. Also it is apparent you have not done your research. How green is wind power? How are they made, where do the rare earth minerals for the magnets and other components come from, how are these minerals estracted and dumped, transported, the destruction of land, wildlife, etc. You call that clean and green? This is not an in my backyard issue -it should not be in anybody’s backyard. As you live up north we know it is not in your backyard so why would you care about anyone else who would have to live with these monstrasities and the destruction of their lives and their land they call home. This is not in my backyard but I am a taxpayer. If you are so for wind power why haven’t you attended any of the meetings and spoken publically for it? Why are you hiding behind your computer? Not much knowledge or information to offer I guess.

I am not sure what infromation you have – I am not a landowner in the town of Castleton and or anywhere in the State of Vermont . You indicate that this is public record: Well I recommend you do research more – because you can’t find my name.
Well, it does matter what Reunion pays because you call the landowner greedy – how can you say that without knowing what they pay?
All I know – the landowner payed property taxes all the years so you can claim great views . You did not complain when their property tax went up for them – yet since they can get some money to offset the property tax – you are saying it is not fair – it is greedy ?
Last you mention you know I live up north – so if you know where I live – why do you thinik I would travel for hours to attend a meeting ? Aren’t you for saving the enviroment – well the usage of gas and the exhaust would not be a very enviromental task ! Why would I pollute the air by driving for hours to come the area (assuming I live North)
As per hiding behind my computor – oh well – you have the right to think what you like and I will go public when I seem it is time. Right now – hiding is ok with me.
As to information or knowledge to offer – I guess you are really great on information ( proof is – property ownership – you are wrong ! I recommend you check again ) – So why would I come to meetings where we do not have realistic and true information provided? So if in my opinion the informtion provided from all the opponents seems to be true to me – may be I will show up. However sofar , there is a lot of noice and
      no substance.
